Frequently Asked Questions
- Why swap left and right?
- Sometimes a recording was captured with cables reversed. Swapping restores the correct stereo image.
- What is phase inversion?
- It flips the polarity of the waveform. Used in some stereo-summing tricks and to cancel out one channel against another.
- When would I use left-only?
- If you recorded two different sources on each channel (dual-mono), extracting one gives you a clean single-source file.
- Difference from Stereo to Mono tool?
- That tool is a shortcut for the mono-downmix mode. This tool offers five other modes.
Six Channel Configurations in One Tool
Channel manipulation is the plumbing of audio. Sometimes you need mono for a phone system, stereo for playback, or a single channel extracted from a dual-mono recording. This tool does all six of the common cases.
The Six Modes
- Stereo → Mono — downmix both channels to a single mono file. Smaller size, plays equally from both speakers.
- Mono → Stereo — duplicate a mono file onto both channels. No new information, but plays from both speakers.
- Swap left / right — reverse the stereo image. Fixes cable-reversed recordings.
- Invert phase — flip the polarity of both channels. Used in stereo summing tricks and phase-cancellation vocal removal.
- Keep left channel only — extract one channel from a dual-mono or stereo source.
- Keep right channel only — same, from the other channel.
Common Use Cases
- Podcast for a phone system that only accepts mono.
- Fix a stereo recording captured with reversed cables.
- Split a two-track podcast recording into separate host tracks.
- Prepare audio for karaoke by phase inverting one channel.
