Frequently Asked Questions
- What does a compressor do?
- It reduces the level of loud parts so quieter parts become relatively louder. The result is steadier overall volume — essential for podcasts and voice-over.
- Difference from Audio Size Reducer?
- This tool compresses dynamic range (loud vs quiet). Audio Size Reducer compresses file size. Completely different jobs.
- What settings should I start with?
- Threshold -20, Ratio 4, Attack 20, Release 250, Makeup 0. Adjust threshold lower for quieter sources.
- Will it distort?
- No. The compressor prevents clipping and preserves clarity.
Audio Compression for Podcasts and Voice-Over
Dynamic range compression is the difference between amateur and professional audio. Without it, quiet phrases disappear and loud ones clip. With it, listeners never touch the volume knob.
What Each Parameter Does
- Threshold — the dB level above which compression kicks in. Signals below this level are untouched. Lower it for quieter sources.
- Ratio — how much reduction is applied. 4:1 means every 4 dB above the threshold becomes 1 dB out. Higher = more aggressive.
- Attack — how fast the compressor responds. Short attack (5–20 ms) catches sharp transients; longer attack (50–100 ms) lets them through.
- Release — how fast the compressor resets. Longer release (200–400 ms) sounds smoother; short release (50 ms) is punchier.
- Makeup gain — compensates for level lost during compression. Add 2–6 dB if the output is quieter than the input.
