Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a noise gate?
- A gate mutes the signal whenever it drops below a threshold. It removes breath, room tone, and small background noises between phrases.
- Difference from the Denoiser?
- Denoise removes continuous noise (fan, hum) while keeping audio playing. Gate silences everything below a level — perfect for the gaps between speech.
- What threshold should I use?
- Start at -50 dB. Lower it to -60 for very quiet rooms, raise to -40 for noisy ones.
- Will it cut off the start of words?
- If the attack is too slow, yes. Keep attack under 20 ms for speech.
What a Noise Gate Does
A noise gate is the opposite of a compressor. Instead of smoothing out loud parts, it silences quiet parts. When audio drops below a threshold, the gate closes and mutes everything. When it rises above, the gate opens.
When to Use a Noise Gate
- Podcasts: remove breath sounds and mouth clicks between sentences.
- Voice-over: eliminate room tone in the pauses.
- Live recordings: reduce bleed between microphones.
- Streaming: silence keyboard noise during quiet moments.

Gate vs Denoiser vs Silence Remover
- Denoiser — removes steady noise (fan, hum) while audio plays.
- Gate — silences the pauses between phrases.
- Silence Remover — cuts out the pauses entirely (shortens the file).
The professional workflow uses all three: Denoise first, then Gate, then Silence Remover for podcasts.
