Frequently Asked Questions

What does it measure?
Integrated loudness (LUFS), true peak (dBTP), and loudness range (LU). These are the three metrics broadcast and streaming platforms care about.
Does it produce a file?
It produces a text report, not audio. Use Loudness Normalizer if you want an adjusted audio file.
Why is my file louder than -14 LUFS?
Modern masters often hit -9 or -10 LUFS. Spotify and YouTube will turn those down to -14 automatically — you lose headroom for nothing.
What true peak is safe?
-1 dBTP is the streaming industry recommendation.
What about LRA?
Loudness range measures dynamic spread. Speech is typically 4–9 LU, music 6–12 LU, classical up to 20 LU.

Measure Loudness Like a Broadcast Engineer

Every streaming platform uses loudness normalisation. Spotify targets -14 LUFS. Apple Podcasts targets -16 LUFS. YouTube targets -14 LUFS. If your file does not match, it gets turned up or down automatically — and you lose either headroom or dynamic range.

What You Get

  • Integrated loudness (LUFS) — the average perceived loudness of the whole file.
  • True peak (dBTP) — the highest signal peak, measured with intersample precision.
  • Loudness range (LU) — how much dynamic spread the file has.

Reference Targets

  • Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music, Tidal — -14 LUFS
  • Apple Podcasts, Apple Music — -16 LUFS
  • General web streaming — -18 LUFS
  • Broadcast television and radio (EBU R128) — -23 LUFS

Interpreting LRA

  • 2–6 LU — very compressed, EDM and heavily processed pop.
  • 6–12 LU — normal music and podcasts.
  • 12–20 LU — classical, jazz, and dynamic recordings.

Next Step: Normalise

Once you know your file's loudness, use the Loudness Normalizer to bring it to the correct target. The two tools are designed to work together.
