How to use De-hum

  1. 1

Upload your audio or video file

Hum happens most on recordings made near power supplies, guitar pickups, or cheap USB interfaces.

  2. 2

    Pick the hum frequency

50 Hz for most of the world, 60 Hz for the US and Canada.

  3. 3

    Download the de-hummed file

Steady hum removed, everything else preserved.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hum?
A steady low-frequency buzz caused by electrical mains interference. It appears at 50 Hz (Europe/Asia) or 60 Hz (US/Canada) plus multiples of that frequency.
Difference from Audio Denoiser?
Denoise removes broadband noise (fans, hiss). De-hum targets a specific frequency. For pure electrical hum, de-hum is more surgical and preserves more of the wanted signal.
How do I know which frequency?
If your recording was made in Europe, Africa, Asia (most countries) or Australia: 50 Hz. North America, Brazil, parts of Japan, Taiwan: 60 Hz.
How many harmonics?
3 is a good default. Use 5 or 6 only if the hum is very strong and you have already tried 3.

Removing Electrical Hum from Audio

Mains hum is one of the most common recording problems. Guitar pickups, cheap USB interfaces, and any cable near a power supply pick it up. The hum appears at 50 Hz (Europe/Asia) or 60 Hz (US/Canada) and creates a steady buzz that ruins otherwise good recordings.

Where Hum Comes From

  • Guitar and bass pickups near transformers.
  • USB microphones with cheap power supplies.
  • Long unbalanced cables running near power cables.
  • Ground loops between devices plugged into different outlets.

How De-hum Works

Unlike a broad noise reduction filter, de-hum uses narrow bandreject notches at exactly 50/60 Hz and its multiples. This surgically removes the hum without affecting the rest of the frequency spectrum.

Choosing the Frequency

  • 50 Hz — Europe, Africa, most of Asia, Australia
  • 60 Hz — USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, parts of Japan, Taiwan

How Many Harmonics?

Start with 3 notches (50, 100, 150 Hz or 60, 120, 180 Hz). If the hum is still audible after processing, increase to 5 or 6. Each additional harmonic notch is narrower, so the risk to music content stays low.

De-hum vs Denoise vs Gate

  • De-hum — surgical removal of a specific frequency.
  • Denoise — broadband reduction of steady noise (fans, hiss).
  • Gate — silences everything below a level (pauses only).

The professional chain for electrical interference: De-hum → Denoise → Gate → EQ → Compressor → Limiter.
